This document contains technical characteristics and information about the design and principle of operation of the rifle and optical sight, as well as the basic rules necessary to ensure the correct operation of the rifle with a sight and the full use of their technical capabilities.ġ.1.1. The use of M16 based sniper rifles in country may have continued after the 1967-69 testing period but would have been un-official and while I am certain that it happened, at least on a limited scale, every bit if evidence I have come across on the matter has been purely anecdotal (I have asked some friends and family that were there including several LRRPs and a 9th ID Sniper, all of which used M14s in that capacity). The technical description and operating instructions for the 7.62-mm Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD) are designed to study rifles and optical sights and maintain them in constant combat readiness. It seems that while some small quantities of these three complete configurations were shipped to and tested in the RVN, they were overshaddowed by the M14 based M21 system. These, and the 655 above, were subbmitted for testing alongside the M14 program in November 1967, the testing going through at least 1969. The rifle was equiped with the Sionics MAW-A1 Noise and Flash Suppressor. The Third was the Colt 656 which had a specific upper consisting of a Heavy barrel and a upper receiver somewhat akin to a flat-top but with a high weaver type dovetail in front of the then standard field (A1) sights. The Barrel was fitted with the HEL M4 Noise Suppressor. Each scope used a specific base that mounted to the carry-handle. The Second was the Colt 655 "High Profile" which was a standard layout XM16E1 or M16A1 that used a Leatherwood/Realist 3-9x ranging telescopic sight or with the M84 Leatherwood ART-II Telescopic Sight as used with the M21 (M14 based sniper-rifle). The First was simply an XM16E1 or M16A1 provided with the Colt/Realist 3x Scope, these were sent to the RVN for testing in March of 1967 The Colt made three Sniper variants of the XM16E1: How much info does it have on that subject? I always wondered if they mounted a regular scope or not. Then there are the 3x and 4x scopes of course.

I recall seeing pictures and reading about startlight scopes. Maybe I have to buy that book, but can you give us more info on this? I'm interested in what kind of equipment they used. Not the suppressor part but the M16 being used as a sniper rifle.

I've been trying to dig up info on this subject on the internet. As such they did have suppressors in the nam, but very very few, and as they were developed for use specifically with the M16 Rifle, and not the carbine, their use on carbines would have been ever more rare. Of couse more probably made it over via other-than-normal channels. According to reccords 120 HEL M4s were sent to Vietnam for testing in 1968 and only 20 of the Sionics MAW-A1s made it to Vietnam for testing in 1969. According to "The Black Rifle", pages 252-261 HEL (Noise Suppressor Assembly, M4) and Sionics (Noise and Flash Suppressor Assembly, MAW-A1) developed Supressors for the M16 Sniper program.
